Sri Lanka Train Tour from Colombo to Badulla, the spectacular highland railway track of Sri Lanka runs winding, ascending climbing all the way from sea level to 1982 meters above the sea level and then descends to Uva valley to reach the terminal point of Badulla at an altitude of 610 meters located over a distance of 290 km. Within this distance are no less than 46 tunnels cut through the hills, none of them are illuminated.
There are only two trains in any one direction each day which run the whole distance. The main train to the highlands called "Udarata Menike" (The highland belle) snakes along for 9 hours to reach Badulla while the Night Mail train takes nearly 12 hours.
The railway was laid by the British in the latter part of the 19th century primarily for freight. (Gauge: 5 ft 6in, 1676mm) Since then very little has been changed. The gradients are steep and the tight curves prevent the use of modern rolling stock.
Lakpura Travels (Pvt.) Ltd, Moratuwa takes pleasure in securing tickets for Observation Saloon on "Udarata Menike" (The highland belle) for the visitors to Sri Lanka.
